Questionnaire summary

Media Questionnaire Summary

During the production of our film, we decided to make a questionnaire to see whether or not the majority of people enjoyed watching our film. During this process we asked 10 random people who all said they enjoyed our film, we was pleased with this outcome as 100% of the people liked what they saw. There was two specific parts of the film that the group of people whom we asked more enjoyed, firstly the part where Laura was flirting with Jack and beckoning him over, we also found out that not only was this due to Laura’s acting skills, it was also down to the slow motion editing and non diegetic music. Also, the group decided throughout the making of the film that we may have made the start to confusing, as one point it discusses coursework then changes directly to a girl. So we decided to ask the group of volunteers that were assessing our film if they could understand the start of the film, we got 100% positive feedback and got rave reviews that it was ‘well explained’.

The reviewers also said that our film was of a good standard of quality and would be happy to see the film fully with this standard of quality; they believed that the acting, editing and music were all outstanding. However one of our reviewers said that the sound quality was not up to standard during the conversation between Jack and Omi, but they did say that they understood the problem we had with the filming in a busy environment.
Every single person who we asked said not only did they enjoy the music but they also thought it was in the perfect places, for example, the up beat music for the production company representing teenage life and happiness and also the ‘porn’ style music which is slow and sexy to represent Laura and last of all the techno style immature music to represent what the film is about.

Also we asked the reviewers what they thought of the titles we created and this time got a 90% positive feedback and a small 10% negative feedback. The positives were that the titles suited well and were put in the perfect places to break up the film and they suited the genre of the film was they were colourful, bubbly and bold. However we received a negative feedback from one person as during the process of making this film we made two samplers of our production and our second sampler we put pauses as the titles come over the top of the characters, and he preferred this to our final product.

The critics that we questioned all firmly agreed that we used the production logo well.
Also lastly we asked the reviewers if they thought that the acting skills were of a good standard and if it was of a good quality for them to watch fully and every single person out of the 10 agreed that it was very watch able.

Evaluation

Me, Jack & Kyle decided to open the film with our own designed production logo with some upbeat music. The film then opens with a fade in diping out of black and the volume of the non diegetic music gradually gets lower and then eventually goes. We thought we would open the film with a long shot of the class mates arguing over their coursework. This shot allows the audience to spot the mis-en-scene as by the props around the characters in the location. The argument also lets them immediatley know where they are located. There was more to this part of the scene, but because of the limit of time we had for the opening, we had to cut parts out to shorten it, but i think it worked well and did a good job of it.

The camera gradually zooms in into a mid shot to show the body language of each characters, you can see Jacks body language shows that he is fed up and not happy by the way he moves his arms and shrugs around the room, I act behalf of Jack as i let him do most of the talking and then i just tell the other two to get out. This shot works effectively because it allows the audience see our face expressions. As Hannah and Chris are sent out, mine and Jacks teacher then steps into the room after hearing the loud shouting from another room. As she steps and starts to give a lecture about how dissapointed she is with mine and Jacks work. The audience now know that the guys are in trouble. This part of the scene we also have our titles of the actors and actresses names. We used suitable font for a title as we thought we need something bubbly and bold so it stands out and gives hints out to our audience that this is a comedy film.

When the film then uses a dip to black fade in an says "the following day" this part is done at a normal pace, this is to slower the pace of the film to show that theres no rush to the change of day. The establishing shot of the school gives a hint out to the audinece about the mis-en-scene with the students playing ball, we kept the diegetic sounds in the background because we thought it gave the shot a realistic look with the birds twittering. Theres then a close up of me and Jack talking about our coursework, again we tryed to keep the setting realistic as possible so we worked in a busy environment with alot of students around in their free time, so there was alot of noise in the background so our recording didn't come out as we expected. Mine and Jacks audio come out quiet poor due to people talking in the background, but because it took time too shoot that scene we didn't have much time to do it again as we had more fiming to do.

Usualy in romance films both protagonists do not know each other, i think in our film we managed to come up with the same concept where both characters don't know each other unitl one see's the other and couldn't keep his eyes of her. As jack starts to walk to towards laura the girl he likes we didn't put any non-diegetic sounds in the background becasue we thought we would try to make the scene abit interesting by making him look like a loser, whist when the camera then changes its view to Laura theres then some saucy non-diegetic sounds that also gives the audience a hint of what her personality, and they type of person she is. The shot where jack falls over we thought we would use the camera as its looking through Laura's eyes so its like from her view. Soon as Jack then falls over there is then a quick cut to the title of our film "Falling For Her" we thought it would be appropriate to use that name because the film is about a young guy who starts to fall in love with a girl and used the title as he fell over in front of her. This would also be easy for the audience to know why we gave that name to our film. We also used non-diegetic sounds again when the title comes up, we used a more upbeat kidish music to go with the genre of our film, we didn't want something miserable, slow or too fast because it wouldn't fit in or suit the genre of our film.

Our film "Falling For Her" converges with two different types of genres, we have gone with a comedey and romance, we thought we'd like to give the audience a film that would keep them ammused. Comedies are made to deliberatley to amuse and make the audience laugh by making a situation and a failing relationship. Usually the plot for a romance comedy is that two protagonist a male and a female would meet each other by either arguments or accidents and then go through a harsh time together and then eventually get together. We've gone for a simple way which is when a male see's the most gorgeous girl he has ever seen and he cant keep his eyes and mind off him and as he makes a move to get to know the girl he then makes a complete fool out himself. We have also used non-diegetic sounds to make the scene much more amusing, we have used sounds which you may not hear in alot of romance comedies, but we have used it to go with the scene and we as a group decided it goes perfect and also gives the scene abit more atmosphere.

The main particular social group our film represents is teenage students, for example at the start of the opening when the teacher is telling the students off shows the location and mis-en-scene that we're now at school, the appearance of the actors also show that they are young students. The girl who plays the gorgeous girl who Jack falls in love with shows that shes a young, hot and flirty, this suggests that shes an average teenager wanting the boy to come over and talk. Comparing the girl to todays girls they are both modern, stylish and very casual. Alot of female teenagers like to keep up with the latest looks and Laura who plays the flirty girl also represents todays girls.

Romance comedy is a very popular genre and appelaing to alot of audiences. Its very common and because it is well known it may influence any big media institutions to distribute our film. I researched the top 5 romance comedy films are all distributed by different comapnies, so this gives me an opportunity to pick one out of many rather than one specific distributor thats monopolizes the industry. The top 5 romance comedy films w'ere "My Big Fat Greek Weeding" which was distributed by IFC, the second was "What Women Want" which worked with Paramount, thridly "Hitch" which was released under Sony, fourth was Pretty Women by Bueno Vista and fifth was "There's Something About Mary" this was distributed by 20th Century Fox. These are all different types of industries that realsed top comedy films and may be intrested in releasing our film.

If i was to pick a media institution that would distribute our film, i would pick a film that worked with one of my favourite romance comedy films. One of my favourite romance comedy films is What Happens In Vegas, this is produced by 20th Century Fox, which has produced one of the most money making romance comedies, but it hasn't produced alot of romance comedy films as other big well known names another film that are in this category that i enjoyed watching was Knocked Up, this film is in the top 10 and Universal Pictures thats produced this have made some top films in romance comedy sector such as The Break Up and Notting Hill, bothe these films are in top 20. I would go with Universal if they were to distribute my film product.

Our film be targeted to audience aged from 12 and above, but specifically 15 to 20 and gender. I think that because its a comedy with some romance it wouldn't have a targeted specific age becasue its a film for everyone to enjoy and everyone likes a laugh and comedies are to make people laugh deliberatly. I specifically think that ages between 15 to 20 will be more intrested in the film because its based on a simliar life to them and so is the narrative becasue it includes school, students, love and some fooling about. I think the age certificate for the film would be a 12 because theres no violence, drugs, sex but there maybe a little bit of strong language.

We got the attention of our audience by using characters the same as our audience. We used student/teenagers as our main characters and a teacher, this then gives away the mis-en-scene as we have teachers and students. We also got the attention of alot of male viewers by using the male gaze, this is when we use laura to play the flirty character and she then is able to attract boys to keep an eye on her, this is one of our ways we attracted our audience. We also used characters that we're able to act in the busy environment, and i think all the actors did they're part very well and may of grabed their attetion there as well.

I feel i have become more stronger on my editing side, i didn't know much when i first started i didn't know how to use Photoshop or Adobe Premier, but because we had Kyle who knew how to use alot of this from past experience we didn't just let him do all the editing but he did teach us alot soit gave me and Jack a part in this and we got more engaged to editing as we got help from Kyle and as we learnt more and more we started to do alot more editing. I learnt that just filming a product and finishing it from there is not a finshed product, i understood why its is inportant to cut parts out and put non-diegetic sounds. I also learnt how important it is to put in transitions to rather using cuts all the time, it give the film something different and it enables you to use different transitions in certain parts such as you can us cuts to build up pace and fade in's to slower down the pace. I also understood to use breaks while filming rather than jst film with our any breaks, it give us time to continue shootin from different angles, and to use different types of shots.

Looking back at my preliminary task, i was pleased with what we had created and i thought we couldn't produce one any better, but after learning to use new transitions and to use non-diegetic audios and others i think this has help us to produce somehing more better, but there were some parts where we should of learnt to become stronger on, i think we could of worked better on our audio as both sounds were not good quality. I am satisfied with what i have leant in this task, i have learnt how to do many adjustments such as applying music, cutting scenes, creating titles and much more. So in the long run its helped me and the team to gain new skills and i think we have made a good opening for a film and we're all satisfied.

Analysis for Stormbreaker

The opening of storm breaker is a blurred shot of a classroom full of young teenagers, as it moves along it becomes more into focus with the titles of the film appearing across the screen. The sound is of a teacher speaking and talking about an assignment, as it moves along to a blonde haired teenagers where the camera stops as it shows that he will be the main character. This boys name is Alex Ryder. His task is to discuss his family life, where he discusses his uncle and his housekeeper. He talks about how boring his uncles life is when the music speeds up and it shows how his uncle is sometype of secret agent. There is quick cuts because of the way the action is happening and how Alex Ryder is talking about his family.

Analysis for No Country For Old Men

At the start of the No Country For Old Men, the main title of the the film comes across the screen, as it slowly fades away Tommy Lee Jones' voice comes into action as it shows the countryside in a country. It shows the mountains and the deserts, Tommy Lee Jones' talks about his weapon and the crimes that happen in his time as Sheffif. Every single shot is a establishing shot of the country, showing the sunrise. The camera then shows a low angled shot of a police car as a police officer takes a man into custody. There is no music in the background, it is just the sound of Tommy Lee Jones' talking about his time as a sheriff and possibly what somebody would hear in the countryside, the rustling of the trees and bushes and the sound of crickets.

Why We Changed Our first Idea

Why We Changed It

During the making of our first idea 'G Wars' we came across many troubles, including, lack of time, lack of budget and a problem with the technical side of our work. We first of all basically wanted to make a film, fill it with effects and then make a spoof comedy of Star Wars, including lightsabers and the cloaks of what a jedi would normally wear, which came to our first problem. Money. We had to pay for all of our props we required to make 'G Wars' when we couldnt afford the objects and clothes we wanted, so the idea was slowly going down hill because of the lack of money. Then as we progressed throughout the weeks writing up the story and entering our main ideas, we realised we did not have the required time we needed, it was taking too long to perfect everything, at this point we started to come to the conclusion that the 'G Wars' film was not going to happen. Then we had to discuss the technical side, with Star Wars being full of effects, sounds and laser, we would have to include all of these special effects to make a realistic Star Wars spoof. However, with time not on our side we had to re-think our plan, we could not afford the props we wanted, Kyle could make the effects happen, so this gave the group hope, but however we did not have the time we needed, so we came up with a better idea and finally changed our film to a better narrative in which we could complete.

Lightsaber

This is our first idea.

Recently over the weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday the 25th of Janaury, Kyle went to Argos and purchased a single lightsaber for our film. He then recorded a short series of footage to test the animation in which Kyle will do during the rest of our film. We bought these lightsabers so we could see if they would work for our film and to make sure we could perfect it so we can do the best work possible.

Opening narrative

This is our first idea

G’wars Opening Narrative This is the that we will make over time, i was the main creator of the story but also i had equal input from my co-workers Kyle and Omi, this film will be only 2 minutes long but the rest of the narrative was required to show people where the film was going. Opening Scene: A dark street in Nottingham, with the star wars writing in the foreground but saying ''G'wars''. Jack and Omi appear in the street. Sizing each other up and they circle around waiting for a battle to take place. Jack and omi discuss the death of all the G’s, Omi being the leader of the G’s stands up for their rights and says how Jack will die and the sith lords will be no more. Jack wanting the G’s race to end, attacks Omi in a quick flurry with his lightsaber. Omi using his primary weapon the ‘’the lightsaber’’ ‘’They brawl’’ Omi strikes down Jack, and as Jack reveals his true identity, and tells Omi he is his father, when Omi says ‘’that’s impossible, your white!’’. Omi leaves the scene of the battle chanting in a gangster tone as G’s music appears in the background. The rest of the film: Omi tells the G race that everything is fine; peace has been restored at last. Omi has taken down the main sith lord, without knowing it was his father, he becomes confused about what Jack said to him, he seems to think it is his Father but yet that’s impossible. Omi’s wife, Layher comforts Omi after these recent events as the G’s celebrate there recent victory as they believe that this is the end of the wars between the G’s and the sith lords. When Jacks wife, Omi’s Mum, has made another son named Jackson, so Jackson, Jacks son and Omi’s brother, finds Omi to take him down, finally and have revenge! Jackson’s finds Omi, and wants to avenge his father’s death without the knowledge that Omi is his brother. Then the two brother’s mum turns up and shouts to tell them that they are brothers, when Omi’s brother cries ‘’YOUR NOT MY MOTHER!!’’ ‘’YES I AM!!’’ The brothers then realize the truth and accept peace between the g’s and the sith lords!

Analysis of Men In Black 2

This is our first idea, which we are not doin anymore.

The opening scene of a sci-fi comedy Men in Black starts with a spoof tv show about the Men In Black. A ordianry man tells the story of the Men in Black and goes back into the past and introduces some characters such as the Men in Black, the Zarthans and Celina. The man tells us the guys in black's objectives is to protect the light of zartha, but unfortunatly Celina interfears and lets the Zarthans get away with the light of zartha.

The diegetic sound then starts to play and the scene then change into space with a space ship flying through the galaxy and destroying planets. Whilst that happens the credits then appear on the screen.

Analysis of Opening of Star Wars Film Revenge of the Sith

This is our first inital idea
16/01/2008

The opening scene of Star Wars opens with silence and a plain black background and a text fades in to the middle of the screen telling us about a setting saying "Along time ago in a galaxy far, far away" this tells us about the setting of the film without showing us anything of the setting. The texts then fades out and the diegetic sound starts to play and the title of the film scrolls up from the bottom and it gives you the brief outline of what has happened and what is about to happen.

The diegetic sound then fades and the titles scroll away. This is when the setting is then established and the two main characters appear.
